SAFE NEW ATTITUDE PROGRAM

It is that time of year again in which the children go “BACK TO SCHOOL”!
Therefore please remember and remind others:
Drive slowly around schools; stop at flashing lights and when the stop sign is extended on school buses. Watch out for children darting out into the street!

As you already know from teaching the Traffic Survival Workshop, NTSI has always focused for the person who takes our course to understand that their values and attitudes plays a huge role in their behavior when driving.

NTSI has developed a course called Safe New Attitude Program (SNAP), which focuses on drivers between the ages of 16 and 25. You make ask: what are the benefits for a young driver taking this course? Since, it does not give insurance discount or point reduction; I would just simple say to “Save Lives”.

I am sure you would all agree our young drivers lives are valuable and the more education they receive would be beneficial for keeping them safe. It is important that they understand about peer pressure and how it could effect their driving, aggressive driving and its consequences, drinking and driving, distracted driving, especially texting while driving and how it may affect their lives.

Now you are probably wondering how can I get young drivers to take the SNAP program?:

Here are some ideas/suggestion perhaps you can use to sell the SNAP product. Visit a local college or high school and let them know about the course and its importance for our young drives. Go to insurance companies in your area and perhaps after hearing the benefits, they will give a discount to any young driver, like they do for students with good grades. If you are a driving school, you could simply advertise with a flyer in your window and tell the parents who come in to registering their soon to be new drivers.

Texting and Driving

More American drivers are texting while driving despite additional legal measures!

It is estimated there were 3,092 deaths in crashes affected by driver distractions in 2010. About half of American drivers between 21 and 24 say they’ve thumbed messages or emailed from the driver’s seat.

Of late, the most frequent form of distraction while driving has been due to cell phone use and texting.

Witnesses said the 18-year-old was text messaging and driving erratically. The teen made a U-turn and then careened off the side of the highway, slamming into a fence. Although this accident occurred in Washington State, it CAN happen anywhere!

NY driver accused of texting in bicyclist death!

NEWFANE, N.Y. — Authorities say a 25-year-old driver was speeding and texting before she hit and killed a 68-year-old bicyclist in western New York two weeks ago.

Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies say Alicia Westgate of Newfane was charged Tuesday with speeding, texting, reckless driving and failure to use due care.

Investigators say Westgate had two children in her car when she ran into bicyclist Richard Webb on a rural road in the town of Newfane just after noon July 16.

Police catch 3,000+ texting & driving!

ALBANY, N.Y. (WIVB) – State Police say they issued more than 3,000 tickets for texting while driving. This was part of the second "Operation Hang Up Campaign" in April. Governor Andrew Cuomo says that is evidence that people haven’t gotten the message about the hazards of distracted driving.

Insurance Discount

Court/State ordered

Parent directed for younger (provisional) drivers

If you have received a citation, before paying your fine, please check with the court or licensing authority for eligibility to attend. NTSI courses are interactive, informative and positive. Attendees are afforded an opportunity to learn about improving their defensive driving strategies, collision avoidance and how to “survive the drive”.

NTSI courses have been demonstrated in numerous studies to reduce collisions and citations of those attending. Contact an NTSI office in your area for additional information on how our courses satisfy a court or state requirement for attendance or how voluntary attendance might save you money.

NTSI and the University of Hawaii

NTSI is excited to announce a new relationship with University of Hawaii on a project
the University developed called “IDecide”. This exciting new relationship has been
formed to enable NTSI to help the University spread the message of IDecide regarding
decisions teens make regarding donation of anatomical gifts when applying for their
initial driver license.

The National Health Institute (NHI) funded a grant for the University to develop a quality
produced video for soon-to–be licensed teens to view to enable them to become more
informed about the decision on their driver license application on whether or not to
become a donor. There is also a video for parents to review to facilitate discussion
between parents and teens on this important decision. You can learn more about
IDecide and view the video at: http://prevention.manoa.hawaii.edu/idecide/.

NTSI’s involvement with this project will be as follows:

To help disseminate this message and access to the video through links on our website and embedded within our online courses.

To include information in NTSI classroom courses about the project and video. Since most of our participants are already licensed drivers, our goal will be to reach parents and siblings who can discuss this issue with their sons, daughters, brothers and sisters about this important decision.

To include information about the IDecide Project in our Florida pre-licensing course to reach teens who are at the decision point on this issue.

To help promote the project through attendance at a joint press conference and through press releases.

PRESS CONFERENCE: The partnership between NTSI and the University of Hawaii
will kick off at a press conference in Honolulu, HI on April 4th. The University has
retained a media consultant to develop written press releases as well as to coordinate
the press conference to be held at the University on this date.

NTSI will be represented at the joint press conference by Greg Cupper, President ,.
Local TV appearances on morning shows have also been scheduled so NTSI will be
receiving a fair amount of publicity with the hopes that national media will also cover this
story to enhance our visibility and gain more national prominence through partnerships
such this.
