Getting your driver’s license is your ticket to lawfully operating a motor vehicle, but it’s also much more than that.

  • It can serve as your official personal ID,

  • and help your wallet get returned to you if it is lost.

There are a number of steps in the driver’s license process in NY. For new drivers, one necessary step is taking a pre-licensing course.

Can you take this course online or do you have to take it in person? What else do you need to know about it? Let’s take a look in the article below.

Can I Take the 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course Online in New York?

Yes, you can take the program 100% online if you choose to. It is also available in person, however, many individuals find that the online course is a much more convenient option.

Who Can Take the 5-Hour Online Course?

New drivers who are looking to get a New York driver’s license and are at least 18 years old can take the New York Online Pre-Licensing Program (NY OPL). In order to start the course, you will need a photo learner permit. When you are issued a temporary permit, you can expect your photo permit to show up in the mail roughly two weeks later.

The online pre-licensing course is not available to those looking to obtain a junior motorcycle license (Class MJ) or a junior driver license (Class DJ). For these individuals, the 5-hour pre-licensing course must be completed in person in a classroom.

NY Online Pre-Licensing CourseIs a Photo Learner Permit Required?

Before you can begin the online course, you will need to prove that you have a valid photo learner permit issued by the State of New York. This is a requirement of the New York State DMV. If you don’t yet have a photo learner permit but only have a temporary learner permit, you’ll need to wait to start your training until you have received your photo permit.

When you pass the written permit exam at a local DMV office, you will be issued a temporary learner permit. You won’t receive your photo learner permit at this time. Instead, you will receive it in the mail about two weeks later.

What Are the Covered Topics in the Pre-Licensing Course?

New drivers will be able to learn about essential rules and driving techniques during this 5-hour online course. The information in this course is designed to help keep you and other drivers safe when you’re operating a motor vehicle. It is also designed to ensure that you are aware of the vehicle and traffic laws in New York State.

This course will also cover topics including:

What ID Is Necessary to Take the Course?

In order to take the online course, you will need to confirm your identity. Voice Biometrics is used as a part of the course to make sure that only the registered participant is completing the program. This feature makes it possible for you to go at your own pace during the course.

You will have to call a phone number when you are first starting the course. You’ll then enter a student ID number that you’ve been given and be prompted to read off specific words and numbers. Your voice will be recorded as you go through this process, and you will have to call in to verify your identity at various points throughout the course.

The Voice Biometrics will compare your voice at the different checkpoints to ensure that only the registered student is participating in the course. Participants should know that three consecutive voice checkpoint failures will result in being locked from the course.

Is There a Final Exam?

There are ten quizzes as a part of the New York 5-Hour Online Pre-Licensing Course. However, there isn’t a final exam.

At the end of each learning module, you’ll find a short quiz to take. In order to continue on to the next section, you’ll need to score a 70% or higher on this quiz. You’ll be glad to know, though, that you have three chances to pass each one of the quizzes.
