Driving in heavy rain can be very dangerous to both your safety and the safety of your fellow drivers when on the road. It causes reduced visibility, can cut off roads with intense flooding, and make it difficult to reliably control your vehicle. NTSI recommends these safety tips for driving in heavy rain:
1. Watch out for hydroplaning
Driving at high speeds across slick pavement can cause your vehicle to uncontrollably slide and is a leading cause of accidents during heavy rain, due to a buildup of water beneath your vehicle causing your tires to lose contact with the road, making it lose traction. It is also possible to hydroplane when there is no rain at all, as even standing water can cause hydroplaning.
2. Slow down
When driving in heavy rain, it is especially important to maintain a safe speed. Many of the most common dangers you will face when driving in a heavy rain, such as hydroplaning, will occur more frequently if you are driving more than the speed limit. Stay safe by lowering your driving speed, that way you can better react to sudden changes in the road and/or weather conditions.
3. Keep a safe distance
Due to the general lack of traction caused by heavy rains, it is advised that you increase the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you. Additionally, if you are driving at a safe, slow, and consistent speed, you will have more time to react if a car ahead of you suddenly stops or abruptly changes lanes.
4. Turn on your lights
Ensure that the lights of your vehicle are always on when in heavy rain. This will increase the visibility of your own car, and help other drivers know your position to avoid an accident.
5. Avoid flooded roads
Flooding is an unavoidable part of heavy rain, so you should be aware of common flooding spots in your city and strive to avoid them if possible. With flooding, the best defense is to avoid the affected area altogether. Most GPS apps, such as google maps, will inform you when a road has flooded and help you in finding an alternate route. Always obey any emergency signage.
6. Avoid distractions
Due to the lack of traction caused by slippery roads, drivers must pay extra attention to their surroundings when they drive during heavy rains. Put away any distractions, including cell phones, and be prepared to make split second decisions.
Stay safe!
These tips for driving safely in heavy rain tips will help you stay safe during this, and every, rainy season. Stay alert, keep at a safe speed, and always drive defensively.
