Greetings, Fleet Friends with a Taste for Trivia,
At the SaddleUp! Conference in Texas, we brought one of our favorite games to lifeโFleet Driving Myths Bustedโlive with an audience of industry pros. These unexpected laws and misconceptions make for great buzzer battles and even better road safety awareness.
So for those who missed it (or who still cannot believe some of these are real), we are bringing the buzzer back for round two!
Letโs see if you can separate fact from Fleet-flavored fiction…
Busting Common Fleet Driving MythsโWith a Twist
๐ซ MYTH: In Nevada, it is legal to ride a camel on the highway.
โ
TRUE.
High-profile vehicle, meet high-hump transport. While we would not recommend replacing your utility fleet with desert dwellers, the law still stands.
๐ MYTH: In Oklahoma, it is illegal to read comic books while driving.
โ
REAL.
Distracted driving laws come in many formsโthis one just has more panels. Whether you are in a squad car, delivery van, or company pickup, eyes on the road beats eyes on Batman every time.
๐ฟ MYTH: In South Carolina, it is legal to store garbage in your vehicle.
โ
YES.
Just because you can… does not mean you should. Especially if you share a cab with coworkers. (Fleet tip: cabin cleanliness is part of vehicle inspection protocols in many companies!)
๐ฆ MYTH: In Massachusetts, it is illegal to drive with a gorilla in the backseat.
โ
TRUE.
And while it may sound bananas, this law does exist. Another reason we recommend fleet driver safety trainingโno primates, no problem.
๐ฅ MYTH: In Utah, it is illegal to throw flaming objects out of a moving vehicle.
โ
CORRECT.
Honestly, we wish this were common sense, not codified law. But here we are. Whether operating a commercial truck or a fire agency vehicle, this one should go without saying.
๐ Fleet Training Fun Fact:
Going to in-person events like SaddleUp! is just one way NTSI stays engaged with the real-world needs of fleet drivers, from commercial driver safety to police, fire, utility, and golf cart safety training. We love connecting face-to-face and keeping things both educational and entertaining!
