Distractions have become ubiquitous in modern society, with all manner of technology demanding our attention at any given time. To this end, distracted driving is one of the leading causes of car accidents. While it may be tempting to look away from the road when you hear your phone ding, or to take a bite of the food you just picked up, it is important that you stay focused on the task at hand–driving–to keep you and your passengers safe. Here are some tips and tricks for avoiding distracted driving:

1. Put Away Your Phone

Do not text or talk while you drive. While driving, keep your phone away from you by placing it in a spot that is difficult to access, like the glove compartment or a bag in the backseat. Turn off your phone’s notifications so that you can stay focused. If it is absolutely necessary, use a hands-free device instead.

2. Stay Focused

Keep your eyes on the road and vehicles ahead of you. Do not let other drivers or passengers distract you with talking or noise; keep your focus on the road while driving. When using the radio or listening to music, keep the volume low–loud noise will distract your attention away from driving.

3. Plan Ahead

If you need directions or have other tasks that require your attention, plan ahead before starting on your trip. Check maps and determine directions beforehand, or make phone calls before leaving so that you do not feel rushed or tempted to take your eyes off the road.

4. Take Breaks

If you feel tired, stressed, or overwhelmed while behind the wheel, find a safe place to pull over and take a break–do not try to power through it. Driving while tired or engaged with other thoughts is dangerous. If you are driving a long distance, taking regular breaks can reduce fatigue and prevent distractions too.

5. Limit Passengers

While not always possible depending on the situation, driving with fewer passengers in the car can help you stay focused and avoid driving distracted.

6. Avoid Eating or Drinking

Eating and drinking while behind the wheel, or even as a passenger, can be incredibly distracting as the task requires extra attention. Holding a drink or piece of food requires the driver to take at least one of their hands off the steering wheel, limiting their control over their vehicle as well. Spilling your food or drink into your lap or onto the seat can quickly become a large distraction too–especially if it’s hot! It should go without saying, but drinking anything alcoholic should be avoided altogether when operating a motor vehicle.

By following these tips and tricks, it’s possible to become a SAFER Driver and avoid distractions that can lead to an accident. Taking extra steps up front before getting behind the wheel may save lives in the end!
