Greetings, Autumn Road Warriors,

Autumn’s incoming beauty is not just pumpkins and pageantry. For Fleets, it is a high-risk “shoulder season” where first rains, leaf-slick roads, longer nights, and campus and corporate traffic can converge.

Today’s NTSI’s Tuesday Tip focuses on Autumn Fleet Safety, reinforcing behavior-based defensive driving strategies to keep your drivers and cargo SAFER mile after mile.

🍂 S is for SAFER: Read the Road, Not the Calendar

Leaf-covered roads create traction issues that are a major Autumn fleet safety hazard. Treat any shiny, leaf-covered surface as low traction. Increase following distance, especially for high-profile vehicles and vans that need longer stopping space.

🔭 A is for Aware: Darkness Comes Earlier

Twilight hides pedestrians, cyclists, and scooters near campuses and corporate parks. Clean headlights, check aim, and use high beams only when legal and appropriate. If your route includes tree-lined corridors, expect shadow flicker that masks hazards.

🎯 F is for Focused: First Rains Lift the Oil

After dry spells, the first Autumn rainfall lifts oil and debris to the surface. Gentle inputs only. Smooth throttle, smooth brake, deliberate steering. If traction control intervenes, do not panic. Ease off and let the system work.

📚 E is for Educated: Campus Carts and Utility Units

Fleet safety is not only for trucks. Golf carts and utility vehicles share paths with pedestrians. Remind drivers that Autumn fleet safety means capping speeds, require lights at dusk, and avoid painted crosswalks when wet. Painted thermoplastic lines can be slick under leaf mulch.

🤝 R is for Responsible: Make Space for People

Schools are in full swing. Expect last-second dashes across lanes, delivery vans double-parked, and ride-share stops in odd places. The smartest Autumn fleet safety move? Slow before school zones and business parks, not in them. Create a cushion early so you are not braking hard where people are present.

Quick Wins for Fleet Drivers

🧪 Traction Test: On an empty, straight stretch after rain, gently brake to feel surface grip. Calibrate before you need it.

🔦 See and Be Seen: Keep a microfiber cloth in-cab to clear interior fog. Replace wiper blades if they chatter.

📏 Space is Grace: Add a full second of following distance in the wet. Add two when you see leaf cover.

🛞 Tires Tell the Tale: Under-inflation shortens stopping distances in the worst way. Check cold pressures weekly.

Quick Wins for Fleet Managers

🗂️ Route Refresh: Nudge dispatch to avoid heavily treed cut-throughs after storms. Branch fall equals debris, equals delays.

🧰 Micro-Maintenance: Mandate wiper replacements, headlight cleanings, and tire checks this week. Tiny tasks, big ROI.

🎓 Behavior Boost: Reinforce coaching on smooth inputs and hazard anticipation during Autumn. Behavior change reduces claims, not gadgets alone.

📊 Measure What Matters: Track near-miss reports around campuses and business parks from now through November. Use trends to target micro-trainings.

SAFER Self-Check for This Week

  • Can I stop on leaf-covered pavement within the space I can clearly see?
  • Are my lights bright, clean, and correctly aimed for earlier sunsets?
  • Do I have at least one extra second of following distance in the wet?
  • Have I briefed my team on utility vehicle etiquette around pedestrians?

NTSI does not teach people how to drive. We teach them how to drive SAFER. If your team could use a focused tune-up before the inclement weather truly hits, our fleet safety training program reinforces the behaviors that prevent collisions and claims.
