Greetings, Fleet Safety Pros,

“December gives us permission to have a little fun, and at NTSI Fleet, we believe safety and storytelling can coexist, especially when fleet telematics for driver safety helps keep drivers mindful, respectful, and SAFER during the holidays.

We have leaned into that spirit throughout December’s Tuesday Tips, proving that fleet safety can be engaging, culturally aware, and even a little fun, without ever losing sight of what matters most.”

As we close out the Yuletide and Santa season, and with the light and hope of Hanukkah still glowing softly in the rearview mirror, and Christmas just around the corner, let us keep singing the SAFER song with a festive flair and an eye toward culture, cooperation, and collaboration.

NTSI is proud to bring more than fifty years of experience to the traffic and driver safety realm, and we think we look pretty good for our age. But even older than NTSI is another institution that also has stood the test of time, and where NTSI helps keep the roads a SAFER place, well, NORAD helps keep the skies safer.

Every December, the NORAD Santa Tracker brings joy around the world. It does not tell Santa how to fly. It does not critique sleigh technique. It simply tracks, monitors, and makes sure the route stays clear.

That distinction is exactly where fleet telematics for driver safety lives.

Telematics systems supporting fleet telematics for driver safety work much the same way. They do not teach drivers how to drive. They observe patterns, flag risk, and provide clarity and solutions you need to manage and protect your most valuable assets in motion, your people, your equipment, and your reputation.

At NTSI Fleet, we say this often, because it matters. We do not teach people and fleets how to drive. We teach them how to drive SAFER.

The real change happens when that telematics information is paired with excellent, behavior-based defensive driving training.

When fleets combine fleet telematics for driver safety with training, especially through partnerships with trusted providers like Lytx, data becomes insight, insight becomes coaching, and coaching becomes SAFER habits on real roads.

Who knows, maybe Santa does have telematics that he reviews with his elves, and that is how Blitzen learned it is just not safe to eat and fly at the same time. You think distracted drivers are bad? Distracted reindeer are worse.

While NORAD’s Santa tracking tradition began as a happy accident in 1955, it has endured for a reason. A misprinted Sears ad in a Colorado newspaper mistakenly listed the phone number for the Continental Air Defense Command, or CONAD. Children began calling, asking about Santa. Instead of correcting them, a kind-hearted and inspired commander, Harry Shoup, played along, assuring callers that Santa’s journey was being safely monitored.

That moment sparked a tradition that evolved from handwritten maps to high-tech satellite tracking and ultimately became a beloved global community outreach program for NORAD.

While the Santa Tracker was a joyful surprise, NORAD’s commitment to safety was never accidental. NTSI was built with that same commitment, bringing purpose, intention, and care to the work of keeping drivers SAFER every day. And like Commander Shoup, NTSI approaches that responsibility with kindness and inspiration.

NORAD also became far more tech savvy over the years, just like NTSI. Fleets can do the same by implementing excellent telematics systems. NORAD tracks Santa online, and tools from companies like Lytx let fleets track routes, patterns, and conditions to help keep drivers SAFER.

So, with Santa in the air and fleets still rolling strong through the holiday stretch, here are this week’s SAFER reminders to carry you through, just in case you do not have a red-nosed reindeer at the helm.

🎄 Tip 1: Track the Route, Not the Reindeer

Santa does not need directions. He needs visibility. Fleet telematics for driver safety works best when it is used to spot trends, not micromanage moments. Look for proactive fleet safety patterns in speed, braking, distraction, and route timing, then pair those insights with training that explains the why. Drivers change behavior when they understand the reason behind the reminder.

🚓 Tip 2: Slow Down, Move Over, Make Space

Some rules never go out of season. Flashing lights on the shoulder, crowded holiday corridors, or a sleigh pulled over with eight very tired reindeer. The principle stays the same. Slow down. Move over. Make space. It is not just polite, it is protective, and it helps everyone get home in one piece, including the peace officer.

🎅 Tip 3: Santa Rule for Inclement Weather

If it looks like a lake, it probably is. Santa has NORAD watching for storms. Fleet drivers need to do the same with standing water, slick surfaces, and inclement winter weather surprises. Slow down, increase space, and never assume you know what is under the surface. Even Santa would reroute before driving a sleigh into a flood zone.

As December winds down and playlists shift from festive classics to whatever helps you survive the wild weather and year end traffic, remember this. Whether you are tracking Santa, monitoring a fleet, or just trying to get everyone home SAFER, fleet telematics for driver safety paired with behavior-based training makes all the difference.

Thank you for joining us all year for these Tuesday Tips, and from all of us at NTSI Fleet, Happy Holidays!

Until next Tuesday, stay kind, stay inspired, and to all a good night.
